Somerville aldermen approve budget


Aldermen have approved a $194.9 million operating budget for fiscal year 2014 after a lengthy deliberation. The budget is up $10 million from the $184.9 million budget for the current fiscal year, and includes a 7 percent increase in school funding to $56.6 million. Before approving the budget, aldermen made $834,215 in cuts, mostly in salaries for vacant positions. The added school funding provides for adding two new prekindergarten classes, which city officials believe will eliminate a waiting list for the program.
