Committee prepares for Town Day

In preparation for the 30th annual Town Day, the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce Town Day Committee is inviting all past and present Town Day committee members to be part of this year’s opening ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7. Sharon Iovanni, past executive director of the chamber, and 2013 Town Day committee chairman Ralph Barile Jr. are coordinating the opening ceremony. This year’s festivities will be dedicated to Alan K. Melkonian, who died in June after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Melkonian was the force behind “Kids Korner” since its inception as part of Town Day. He provided the tents, staffing, prizes, and signs; he and his crew worked the ticket booth for the rides and donated the funds to a number of Stoneham school programs and nonprofits. In addition, the chamber plans to honor the Stoneham survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings during the opening ceremony with a donation to the Stoneham Marathon Victims Fund. Former or current committee members who would like to attend the opening ceremony should contact Iovanni at 781-248-9754 or by e-mail at Sharon.iovanni@rcn.com , or the chamber’s executive director, Jennifer Welter, at 781-438-0001 or ed@stonehamchamber.org.
