Teenagers face charges over stolen cars

Two local teenagers are facing multiple car-theft charges. Lawrence police officer Gary Yancey was overseeing the tow of another car when he decided to check the license plates of two Honda Accords that drove past him. Both turned out to be stolen. Yancey then followed them and identified himself to the drivers, at which point both cars sped off, and later crashed in two different areas. The teens, both 16 — a boyfriend and girlfriend whose names were withheld because of their ages — were unhurt but now face charges of receiving stolen motor vehicles, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of property damage.
