Despite lack of grant aid, playground renovation plans continue

Team Haverhill plans to move forward with renovations of the Portland Street Playground, despite the fact that the project did not receive a grant from Kaboom!, a nonprofit organization that helps build playgrounds nationwide. Although it lost a bid for an $85,000 grant, the independent volunteer action group still hopes to begin renovations by next spring. According to Alice Mann, president of Team Haverhill, the project will focus on a new children’s playground and rebuilding a basketball court. To date, Team Haverhill has received a $25,000 commitment from the city, a pledge the civic group has agreed to match. However, to make the project a success, volunteers at all levels also are needed. If interested, e-mail
