Playground comes in for new school year

Roosevelt Elementary School is opening the school year with a new playground. Slides, swings, and a climbing structure are handicapped-accessible, and are also open during nonschool hours to all residents. A 15-member committee led the effort to build the playground. The school’s PTO raised about $25,000 in recent years through a penny-drive, buy-a-brick campaign, and other fund-raisers. “This is a great development for the Roosevelt community, the neighborhood, and all of Melrose, ” Roosevelt principal Grace Basile said in a news release. Donations also came from the Amazing Grace Golf Tournament, which honors 9-year-old Grace Zinck of Melrose, who was born with a rare genetic disorder called Trisomy 18. Money from this year’s tournament, scheduled for Sept. 27 at Mount Hood Golf Course, will also be donated to the Roosevelt School.
