Contractor abandons nearly finished Nahant causeway project

State officials and Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Jack Murray are working to find a solution after the contractor walked away from the Nahant Causeway reconstruction project. Town Administrator Andrew Bisignani said about 85 percent of the project was complete when general contractor Pihl Inc. filed for bankruptcy in late September. “The state was as surprised as we were that they pulled out,” Bisignani said. With most of the project done there’s been no disruption in traffic, he said, but there is still finishing to be done, including work on the parking lots, traffic circles, repairing some dunes on the abutting Nahant Beach Reservation, and landscaping. “We were concerned about the stability of the beach area, but the DCR has assured us that there is no more threat this year than there was last year,” Bisignani said. “The dunes are stable.”
