Special Town Meeting to tackle several articles

Residents will face a handful of articles at the upcoming Special Town Meeting on Tuesday. One article on the warrant will ask residents to approve a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana treatment centers or registered marijuana dispensaries in town. Although the state law passed on Nov. 6 allows the cultivation, distribution, possession, and use of marijuana for medical use, under the town’s current code a medical marijuana treatment center is not a permitted use in Newbury. The moratorium would be in effect through June 30, 2014, allowing time for the town to study the potential effect on land use, structures or premises for cultivation, preparation and sale, and to consider adopting an amendment to the town’s bylaws to address the new state law. Town Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Newbury Elementary School.
