Officials considering camp purchase

Rowley town officials have shown interest in the Girl Scouts camp called The Center, and an article on the warrant for the Nov. 4 Special Town Meeting will seek $10,000 to be used for costs associated with the evaluation of a potential future purchase. Earlier this year, Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts announced its intention to sell the 187 acres at 390 Wethersfield St., along with Camp Paradise in Beverly. Girl Scouts representatives have met with the Board of Selectmen and other officials, and in September they hosted a walk through the property for selectmen, the Conservation Commission agent, town administrator, and organizations and individuals potentially interested in operating camps on the property. The organization has stated a preference that some or all of the land be preserved as open space, and is working with Essex County Greenbelt to evaluate conservation options for the property, which in addition to open space features the camp area and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Special Town Meeting is scheduled for the Pine Grove School beginning at 7:30 p.m.
