With Sunday’s retirement of Richard Smith as Ipswich’s fire chief, the town has appointed retired Chelmsford fire chief John Parow as an interim replacement until a new fire chief is hired. Smith worked for 26 years in fire service, 20 of which were in Ipswich. He was named chief on Dec. 30, 2011. Parow’s contract is for six months, with an option to extend. In addition to his work in Chelmsford, Parow was fire chief in East Bridgewater, and served in the North Reading department.
