The Screening Room completes fund-raising

The Screening Room, a fixture on State Street in downtown Newburyport since 1982, has completed its fund-raising effort, which included an online Kickstarter campaign, open house events, and an evening of music at the Grog. In all, donors contributed $108,000, nearly double the original goal of $60,000. The surplus of funding will make it possible for the single-screen theater to replace its sound system with new state-of-the-art components. A new screen and carpeting, a fresh coat of paint, and professional cleaning of the 99-seat theater also will be incorporated into the Screening Room’s makeover. Most of the donations were collected online. In all, more than 1,300 donors contributed, 650 on Kickstarter alone, said Andrew Mungo, co-owner of the Screening Room. During the next few weeks, Mungo said he will be writing thank you notes and distributing rewards to key donors. He is seeking volunteers to help with the effort. Mungo is asking anyone who can spare some time on Wednesdays or Sundays to organize the rewards to e-mail him at For more information about the Screening Room, visit
