Residents vote in favor of saving River Road

After 90 minutes of discussion, residents voted 126-58 at the Oct. 21 Special Town Meeting in favor of a nonbinding citizens petition article that seeks to save a collapsed portion of River Road. Specifically, the article sought to rescind the vote of the Board of Selectmen, which had petitioned the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission to discontinue the county easement on that portion of the road. Finance director Carol McLeod said that the town has tried unsuccessfully to find funding for repairs, and that estimates from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division run between $3 million and $5 million. The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission planned to continue its hearing on closing the road last Wednesday at Town Hall.
