Veterans tax-relief program could start in January

Town Meeting members by a vote of 134 to 5 last month accepted provisions of the Valor Act, a state law that allows discharged veterans to receive abatements on their property tax bills in exchange for working for their municipalities. Initially, the town will have 25 positions open for the program, which will begin in January. To be eligible, veterans must have been honorably discharged and own their own home in Billerica. Those who work 93.75 hours will receive a $750 abatement. The tax-relief program, which is funded through the assessor’s overlay account, will not affect the town’s operating budget. There is no age or income limit for participation in the program. For more information, contact the town’s Veterans Office, 978-671-0968.
