Asbestos removal contractor to pay penalties for improper handling and disposal

Essex-based McConnell Enterprises Inc., a state-licensed asbestos removal contractor, will pay up to $125,000 in civil penalties to resolve allegations of improper handling and disposal of asbestos during the demolition of the former Crompton and Knowles building in Worcester, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office. Under terms of the settlement, McConnell will pay the state $82,500 in civil penalties and will be docked another $42,500 if it fails to conform to waste regulations during the next 18 months. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
