Senator Kathleen O’Connor Ives recently announced that two Merrimac elementary schools will receive a $10,000 Innovation Enhancement Grant. The grant will be used to implement the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program at the town’s Dr. Frederick N. Sweetsir and Helen R. Donahue elementary schools. Innovation Schools, established in 2010, are in-district public schools that receive the autonomy and flexibility in some areas typically associated with charter schools. “The money will assist in building a curriculum and environment that offers the creative strategies for student achievement,” O’Connor Ives, a Newburyport Democrat, said in a press release.
