Town leaders have developed a tax work-off program for veterans. If approved and funded at Town Meeting in May, the program will provide up to a $500 annual tax credit to participants, with two separate credits of up to $250 given on the real estate tax payments made in February and May. To qualify for the program, participants must meet the state definition of a veteran, own and occupy a home in Stoneham, and meet certain income and asset limitations. Individuals interested in participating may submit applications beginning in March, in anticipation of favorable Town Meeting action. Applicants must be capable of performing light duty/maintenance work. The program does allow for a volunteer to work in place of the veteran.
