The town recently swore in 10 newly hired firefighters. Eight of those appointed are filling new positions funded through a $1.2 million grant that the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded to Saugus in January through its Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program. The other two were hired to fill existing positions vacated by retirement, according to Town Manager Scott Crabtree. The eight new firefighters will supplement understaffed shifts and allow the Essex Street fire station to remain open. The station has been considered for closure during the last several years due to budget constraints. The new firefighters are Anthony Arone, John Carozza, Ryan Poussard, Cory Rutledge, Dennis Sanjurjo, Michael Leary, Michael Cross, Kenneth Powers, Michael Ferreira, and Steven Morando.
