City leadership voted unanimously this month to approve the Complete Streets Ordinance, cementing Somerville’s mission to encourage walking, biking, and public transportation use. “We are the first community in Massachusetts to pass an official ordinance,” said Mayor Joseph Curtatone. “[We] will make our regional system more accessible, safe, and less dependent on the automobile.” The goal is to improve resident’s health and reduce the environmental effect of cars on the community by improving pedestrian sidewalks, bike lanes, and public transportation stops. The plan also includes better access to transportation for people with disabilities.
