Somerville school opens innovation lab

In partnership with Lesley University, the kindergarten through eighth grade John F. Kennedy School in Somerville is launching the district's first Makerspace/Innovation Lab. The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the lab at 8:15 a.m. Dec. 9 in the school, 5 Cherry St. Housed in what had been the school's science lab, the new space will be specially outfitted with equipment designed to enable students to explore concepts in the so-called STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. Activities will range from building and programming robotics to creating complex kinetic art sculptures and working with electronic components to create circuits.
