The Salem Award Foundation for Human Rights and Social Justice will announce the 2016 winner of the Salem Award at 4 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Opus Underground . The Salem Award honors present-day champions of human rights and social justice. The event is free and open to the public .

Muse Paintbar has opened two new local locations: 461 Artisan Way at Assembly Row in Somerville , and 1130 Market St. in Lynnfield . Beginner and advanced painters alike can enjoy beer, wine, and snacks, all while painting with the guidance of a local artist.


The North Shore Jazz Project All Stars , a youth jazz band for high school musicians, is holding free, open auditions at Ipswich High School from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 8. The all-stars are led by saxophonist and Berklee professor Mike Tucker . Those who play wind instruments, piano, guitar, or drums are welcome to audition. The Newburyport Police Department has launched its first K-9 program with a $25,000 grant from the Stanton Foundation . Officer Eric Marshall and Epic, his 2-year-old German shepherd, completed the 15-week Boston Police K-9 Academy program on Dec. 24. They trained extensively in tracking, obedience, aggression, and searches, and began patrols on Dec. 28.
