Area residents can learn more about how they can help to alleviate the suffering in war-torn Syria.
Nadia Alawa, founder and president of NuDay Syria, will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the Lynnfield Democratic Town Committee at 7 p.m. on March 16 in the Merritt Room on the second floor, 600 Market St.
Formed in 2011, NuDay Syria is a nonprofit relief agency with a particular concern for the plight of displaced Syrian women and children. The organization sends shipping containers filled with nonperishable food, toys, hygiene supplies, and medical equipment to conflict areas.
It also raises funds to help Syrian women and children in other ways, including finding housing and work for Syrian refugee widows in Turkey.
A mother of eight who is married to a Syrian native, Alawa created the relief agency out of her house in East Hampstead, N.H. At the March 16 event, which is open to all, the town committee will be collecting nonperishable food, soccer balls, and stuffed animals. Donations also can be dropped off before March 16 at 10 Heath Circle.
