Matt Coogan, who serves as both senior planner for the city of Gloucester and planner for the Town of Essex, was recognized earlier this month as part of the state’s 10th annual Leading by Example Awards.
A Department of Energy Resources program focused on clean energy and environmental opportunities at public facilities, the Leading by Example program gives the award to those whose policies and programs have resulted in positive, significant conservation changes in state and municipal operations.
Coogan was recognized for efforts in both Gloucester and Essex, both of which have received the state’s Green Communities designation. His achievements include the creation of an Energy Reduction Plan for all municipal buildings in Essex (including some as part of a Town Hall renovation) and management of a project to replace 2,800 streetlights in Gloucester with LED fixtures.
“I’m excited to receive the award,” said Coogan. “We’ve worked hard in Essex and Gloucester to reduce our energy consumption, and have had a lot of people work to make the communities greener and to reduce our carbon footprint in both communities.”
