Haverhill will test out solar powered bench

Mayor James J. Fiorentini has announced the city of Haverhill will be piloting a solar-powered bench, which was installed on the boardwalk behind Harbor Place.

Designed by Cambridge-based Soofa, an MIT Media Lab spinoff that designs smart urban furniture by embedding electronics into everyday city objects, the bench will provide free, solar-powered charging for mobile devices.

The city also will be able to track how often the bench is used as a way to measure positive community development.

The bench cost about $3,800, which was paid for by a grant. To date, Soofa benches have been installed in more than 50 cities across the country, including Boston.
