Walnut Street Center welcomes new director

A Somerville-based human services agency has undergone a change in leadership even as it readies a move to Medford. Joseph Churchill has retired as executive director of the Walnut Street Center, a nonprofit that serves people with intellectual disabilities. Churchill, who had led the agency since 2011, was succeeded by Carolyne Guffey. A 30-year veteran of the field, Guffey joined the Walnut Street Center in 2011 and had been chief operating officer since 2013. In March, the Walnut Street Center plans to move from its longtime building in Union Square to a 42,500-square-foot building at 291 Mystic Ave. in Medford. Its current building sits on property that the MBTA seized by eminent domain for the Green Line Extension.
