Plans are beginning to take shape for a memorial to US Army Master Sergeant Gregory Trent, a Norton High School graduate who died Aug. 8 in Bethesda, Md., from wounds suffered in Afghanistan. The Norton Gold Star Committee has received permission to use town-owned land on West Main Street near CVS Pharmacy. Selectman Robert Kimball, vice chairman of the committee, said that according to the current vision for the memorial, visitors would step into the approximately 70-foot deep site via a walkway from the sidewalk. The memorial would widen into an area 36 feet in diameter with three benches facing a flag pole. A granite stone with Trent’s name and information honoring his service would be placed prominently. The memorial would have space for flowers and be surrounded by shrubs, he said. On Nov. 29, the Board of Selectmen established a gift account for donations. Kimball said the committee needs about $75,000.
