The Rochester Council on Aging is getting a $44,510 grant from the state transportation department to help buy a new van, said council director Sharon Lally. The nine-passenger, handicapped-accessible van will replace one of the council’s three vans, a 2005 model that is not handicapped-accessible, Lally said. The total cost will be around $55,000, she said, with the town paying the balance. The agency applied for the grant in the spring, Lally said, adding that the council “is the only transportation option for a lot of people in our rural town.” The council last year provided 101 residents with nearly 4,000 rides, Lally said. The money comes from the state’s Mobility Assistance Program.
