Solar bylaw approved

Town Meeting approved a bylaw requiring commercial solar projects to obtain a special permit from the Planning Board, a change that gives the town stronger regulatory power over future projects. However, the Dec. 6 session also struck from the new bylaw a provision that would have barred solar power projects from densely populated residential districts. After a two-hour debate during which some residents said they did not wish solar projects excluded from a part of town in which they owned property, Town Meeting voters approved the new bylaw by the required two-thirds majority. Voters also defeated a proposal that would have restricted solar projects to a small area in town.
