Police receive drunk driving grant

Hingham police have received a $1,000 grant from the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security to help enforce the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign again this holiday season. Forty-eight other towns in Massachusetts are participating in the effort, which is putting additional officers on the street from Dec. 14 through Jan. 1. According to Police Sergeant Steven Dearth, officers will be on duty during times and in areas where drunk driving arrests have been occurring. Dearth said that campaigns such as this have helped reduce the number of drunk-driving arrests to 73 from Jan. 1 to Dec. 13 of this year, compared with 89 for the same period last year.
