Searching for the town’s eldest

Since the most recent recipient of Wareham’s Boston Post Cane died in October at the age of 101, the Board of Selectmen has been looking for the next person to be honored as the town’s oldest citizen. The tradition of presenting this special walking stick to the town’s oldest resident dates back to 1909, when the publisher of The Boston Post newspaper distributed canes to Wareham and hundreds of other towns across New England as a marketing tool. If you think you or someone you know might be the oldest person in town, call the selectmen’s office at 508-291-3100, ext. 3101, or e-mail jwilson@wareham.ma.us. Birth dates will be verified by the town clerk’s office. The deadline to contact the selectmen is Jan. 14.
