Middleborough is one of four Massachusetts communities recently given “BioReady” ratings by the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, indicating that the town is suitable for biotechnology companies looking to expand or relocate. Communities are given a rating of bronze, silver, gold or platinum by the nonprofit trade association, and Middleborough received a bronze rating, based on a survey of its zoning bylaws, building codes, and other criteria. According to Middleborough’s planning director, Ruth Geoffroy, the town has established zones for biotech and industrial uses with infrastructure capable of accommodating up to 4 million square feet of industrial-corporate park development. Abington also received a bronze rating, West Boylston a silver, and Hopkinton was upgraded to gold from bronze. The council has deemed 72 Massachusetts communities “BioReady” since its rating campaign began in 2008.
