Selectmen have chosen local police Lieutenant Maurice Splaine as Kingston’s police chief, succeeding Joe Rebello. Rebello, who retired on Jan. 25, had recommended Splaine for the job. The 50-year-old Splaine, a full-time Kingston officer for more than 20 years and a lieutenant for eight years, was sworn in as interim chief until a contract as permanent chief is negotiated. Splaine said last week that the Police Department is “very short-handed” and has been forced to become “reactive.” “I’d like to become proactive,” said Splaine, who hopes the town will hire an officer to offset his move into the chief’s job, and replace two officers who had been assigned to Kingston schools before budget cuts eliminated the positions five years ago.
