Boards aim to reconcile at joint meeting

The Board of Selectmen and the School Committee, which have locked horns over school regionalization and a school building project, have agreed to hold a joint meeting to seek common ground. No date has been set, but on Jan. 31, Town Administrator William Phelan delivered an oral invitation from the selectmen to the School Committee for the meeting. In the past, School Committee members have expressed dismay that selectmen decided to pursue a state grant for regionalization without consulting the School Committee. Although both boards support a building project, School Committee members were concerned that regionalization would jeopardize the district’s standing in a state pipeline for construction funding that was originally intended for a Holbrook-only school. In an interview, School Committee vice-chairwoman Ann Poppenga said the committee was pleased with the selectmen’s invitation, which she called “long overdue.”
