Rockland named a “Green Community”

Rockland last week was awarded a state grant of $185,425 and joined more than 100 towns and cities in Massachusetts as a “Green Community.” The state Green Communities Designation and Grant Program rewards towns that meet clean energy benchmarks, such as adopting flexible zoning for solar installations. Town Administrator Allan Chiocca said the grant will be used for various energy conservation projects, including the replacement of lights and installation of motion sensors on lights at schools, and a study of energy-saving renovations at Town Hall. Chiocca said the town will also look into replacing police, school, and town government vehicles with more energy-efficient cars. “I just think [the Green Community designation] is another indication of the positive momentum we’re making here in Rockland,” he said.
