    Demolition delay bylaw discussed

The Norton Historical Commission is drafting a demolition delay bylaw for possible consideration at the spring Town Meeting May 13, according to Town Manager Michael Yunits. Such a bylaw typically requires notification and a public hearing before historic buildings can be demolished; affected buildings might be defined by their age or inclusion on the town’s inventory of historic homes. Norton Town Meeting defeated a demolition delay proposal in 2005. Today, the town would like to see a historic home preserved at the site of a proposed affordable-housing development at 274 East Main St., but Yunits said he was confident the developers would work with the town to save the house. The bylaw would be useful for the future, he said, and the Historical Commission plans to have language drafted by March 11 for review by the selectmen on March 14.
