Officials weigh Town Meeting articles

Sharon officials have begun reviewing articles for the May 6 Town Meeting, Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz said. Articles the Board of Selectmen will consider placing on the warrant include a property tax work-off provision for veterans, allowing them to get a tax reduction for volunteering; a local-option meals tax; an increase in the local-option room tax; and moratoriums on medical marijuana dispensaries and adult zoning, according to Puritz. In 2011, the board considered the local-option taxes and rejected the meals tax, but it placed a lodging increase on the warrant that would have raised the tax from 4 percent to 6 percent. Town Meeting defeated the increase after the proprietors of an inn said the tax would hurt their business.
