The town now has its own weather station, installed on the roof of the Cohasset Middle High School and part of a network of stations around the country. School athletic director Ron Ford was instrumental in getting the $26,700 system, which started running in March and was financed by the Cohasset Education Foundation, South Shore Playhouse Associates, Cohasset Soccer Club, and Cohasset Youth Lacrosse. The weather information, especially lightning detection, will be useful in planning outdoor sports events for both the high school and community groups, Ford said. The station is hooked into the school’s online network and comes with related curriculum for all grades, he said. The station includes a camera, lightning sensor, and instruments measuring temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity and barometric pressure. The photos and data can be seen at weatherbug.com.
