Scouts retiring used flags

Boy Scout Troop 333 is collecting used American flags for a disposal ceremony scheduled for May 18 at Cathedral Camp in Freetown. A collection box is located at the Lakeville town clerk’s office at Town Hall, said Michael McCormack, troop committee chairman. At last year’s ceremony, which involves Boy Scouts folding the flags until just the stars are exposed, laying them on a fire, and saluting until the stars are no longer visible, more than 1,300 flags were disposed of, with about 450 coming from Lakeville, he said. “The boys take this very seriously; no troop I’ve been with takes this lightly,” McCormack said, adding that “sometimes a flag is in very good shape, and a boy will take it home to hang in his room.” The public is welcome to attend, he said.
