Voters reject school parking plan

Voters shot down a debt exclusion that would have paid for a $1.5 million parking lot project at Butler Elementary School. The measure was voted down 241 to 139, according to Town Clerk Jean Kopke. The project won approval at the last Town Meeting, but has to pass in a townwide election as well because the debt would be outside the limits of Proposition 2½, Kopke said. Turnout was a light 13 percent in the April 9 election, with 393 people voting, she said. There were no contested races on the ballot and some empty slots. Kopke said Charles Comeau won reelection to the Library Board of Trustees in a write-in campaign, after he failed to return his nomination papers in time to get on the ballot.
