Canton police said they stopped a break-in on York Street last week while the suspect was still in the house. The homeowner returned home on the afternoon of April 16, backed up the driveway, and saw the basement door was destroyed, police said. After police were called at about 3:55 p.m., they set up around the house, according to police Lieutenant Thomas Keleher. Police arrested the suspect, James M. Verdone Jr., 36, of Middleborough, and charged him with malicious destruction of property over $250 and breaking and entering during daytime.
