Church weathervane will rise again

The weathervane on top of the steeple at the United Church in Walpole was knocked sideways during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 and was removed for safety reasons. Now church officials are hopeful the downtown landmark, with its distinctive copper ball, will be back in place by the end of May. Workers built scaffolding around the steeple of the historic church in April and are waiting for a crane to lift the restored metal weathervane to the top of the centuries-old building on Common Street, according to church volunteer Barbara Tausey. “We were hoping it would be done within the month of April; we’re certainly hopeful and expecting it will be done within May,” she said.
