City awarded environmental grant

The city of Brockton has been awarded a $105,500 MassDevelopment grant to fund the environmental remediation of the Montello Street Parking Lot, the first step in the redevelopment of the space between Allen and Crescent streets. In 2011, Brockton completed two phases of environmental testing on the property using a $57,000 Federal Hazardous Brownfields Site Assessment Grant. The next step is to remove three underground storage tanks identified in the assessment. Brockton Mayor Linda Balzotti said the project is part of a coordinated plan to reinvest in infrastructure, improve the quality of life in the community, and bolster its economic vitality. In a statement, President and Chief Executive Officer Marty Jones said MassDevelopment has a proven track record of transforming challenging sites into productive parcels. “The funds have improved the environments and economies in gateway cities like Brockton,’’ said Jones, “and we’re pleased to continue our support of the city’s downtown vision.”
