Elementary School Coalition raises funds

The Westwood Elementary School Coalition raised more than $60,000 at its spring fund-raiser in March, which will be divided among the school district’s five elementary schools. The volunteer, nonprofit group supports activities, equipment, and enrichment opportunities that aren’t supported in the school district’s budget. It also boosts the schools’ parent-teacher groups. Co-presidents Leigh Wasserman and Mike Walsh said in a statement that Westwood is known for its exceptional schools. The fund-raising helps boost the school experience for children, they said. Sponsors for the event were Roche Bros. Supermarkets, South Liquor Mart, Legacy Place, Dedham Savings Bank, and Needham Bank. The group has raised more than $1 million over its 19-year history for curriculum and cultural enrichment programs, field trips, computer equipment, recess supplies, art programs, and classroom supplies for the Deerfield, Downey, Hanlon, Martha Jones, and Sheehan elementary schools.
