Student wins coveted state scholarship

Katie Albanese, a junior at Scituate High School, has been awarded the Christian Herter Scholarship from the state of Massachusetts. One of 25 students selected out of a nomination pool of 500 students, Albanese will receive financial support for any college in the country. According to Sharon Mohr, a Scituate High counselor, the award recognizes personal strength, academic promise, and a desire to pursue a postsecondary education. No Scituate student has won the award in the last 15 years. “Katie is a natural leader here at school and has overcome the hardships of losing a parent [and] living in a homeless shelter . . . ,’’ Mohr said. “Katie was one of the few award recipients who was also a team captain of a sports team [softball] and class officer.” Albanese hasn’t decided where she wants to attend college, but is interested in studying political science and communication and is looking at schools in the Washington, D.C., area, Mohr said.
