Intersection easements cost $500K

Quincy will spend $500,000 on easements to improve the intersection of Hancock Street and East/West Squantum Street, with more than half going to two properties. According to Christopher Walker, spokesman for Mayor Thomas Koch, the city will pay Walgreens $175,000 and the Shell gasoline station $145,000 for land that abuts the intersection. The remaining money will go to over a dozen parcels for sidewalk reconstruction and driveway easements, which are needed for the state- and federally funded $3.5 million street alignment project. The easements account for nearly 30,000 square feet of land, said Walker, who added some publicly owned areas near the high school also will be affected, but “those don’t cost us anything.” Money for the easements has already been approved by the City Council, with more than $440,000 coming from free cash.
