Weymouth

Preliminary election for district one

The election for District 1 councilor will be the only one on the ballot for the town’s preliminary election, which will be held Sept. 17, said Town Clerk Kathleen A. Deree. The candidates are Dominic Giannone III, Kevin Harris, Becky Haugh, Angel Montanez Jr., and Victor Papp III, she said. The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election on Nov. 5. Incumbent Frank Burke, who was appointed to fill the seat after Papp resigned when he moved out of state, is not running. Papp has since moved back to Weymouth, said Deree, who added that City Council and school committee races didn’t attract enough candidates to warrant a preliminary election. Residents have through Aug. 28 to register to vote in the preliminary election.
