Letter on body image story

After reading your article on Notre Dame Academy’s program dealing with the issue of teenage girls’ body images (“View in the mirror,” Oct. 10), I felt obliged to raise awareness of another excellent program dealing with the self-esteem of teenage girls.

Fontbonne Academy’s Love Your Body Week has been an annual event since 2008. Taking place during a week in February, it celebrates the individual girl’s inner and outer beauty. The whole school gets swept up in this student-run weeklong event, sending each other friendship bracelets and positive messages that strengthen the ways we see ourselves and others. Mirrors are covered with inspirational words, and everyone participates in activities meant to inspire self-esteem and healthy living.

Love Your Body Week has grown out of a strong health and wellness curriculum that has been in place for 20 years. The week’s effect on students is instantaneous; just walking down the halls you can see the positive transformations of the girls.

This year I look forward to being one of the students organizing the event, which has truly become a highlight of the Fontbonne Community and a cornerstone of the school.
