Bridgewater

‘Surrounding community’ negotiation

Education, public safety, and traffic are the main issues Bridgewater is raising with proponents of the Raynham Park slots parlor. The town is seeking to be designated a “surrounding community” in the developer’s application to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for the state’s only slots license, according to Town Manager Michael Dutton. Bridgewater expects extra costs from responding to traffic-safety incidents on Route 24 and reconfiguring a difficult intersection on Route 104. Bridgewater could also face pressure to spend more on the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District if Raynham wants to spend some of its own $1 million annual payment from the slots parlor on education, Dutton said. He said the towns have a strong relationship and that he wants to be clear that Bridgewater is “not looking for a big payday” but only to cover extra costs. The deadline for reaching surrounding-community agreements is Oct. 31.
