Athletes team up for wrestling

Abington High athletes can join Rockland High’s wrestling team this winter, in what could be the first of several joint sports ventures between the two schools. Abington Athletic Director Peter Serino said Rockland invited Abington to help fill out its team's 14 weight classes, creating an opportunity for some students who don’t play a winter sport. Seven Abington students indicated interest in competing on the team. Abington would contribute to transportation costs, while Rockland would provide the coach, facilities, and equipment, Seriono said. The proposal was approved for one year by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association last month, and by the Abington School Committee Tuesday night. Serino said the program will be reviewed after the first year and he is considering other co-op teams for the future. The Abington girls lacrosse team was opened to Rockland students last year, but none participated, he said.
