Web group disbanded

Selectmen voted to deactivate the town’s Website Committee last week, after board chairman Mike O’Donnell denied requests by residents, including the committee’s chairman and the town clerk, to speak on the issue. The committee, chaired by IT professional Stephen Dewhurst, designed and updated the town’s website, but this year some selectmen criticized the committee for making website policy without taking directions from the board. The vote to disband the committee was 3 to 1, with Selectwoman Sarah Hewins, who is Dewhurst’s wife, in opposition. Some selectmen argued that others should be permitted to speak before the vote, but were overruled by O’Donnell. Board members said town officials would operate the website for the time being, but would look into hiring a web host company for the future.
