    Early-bird” discounts may be offered

Town officials are for ways to entice people to buy beach passes next year, even though the beach could be shut down again for part of the summer to protect piping plovers. Town Manager Rene Read said he and the beach advisory committee are looking to revive an “early-bird” discount to lure people back early. “I think last season left a bad taste in people’s mouths,” he said. The beach was closed 33 days, including the Fourth of July, and Read said officials can’t guarantee that won’t happen again. He said 18 pairs laid eggs in this past summer, compared with 14 pairs in 2012 and 12 pairs in 2011. “It isn’t so much the number of the birds as where they land,” Read also said. He also said the town hopes it can provide pass holders with better information regarding parking availability, possibly through a smartphone app.
