Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble, who is retiring on Halloween after 20 years in the job, and 40 years in the Westwood Fire Department, is being succeeded by someone familiar with the town.
Selectmen voted unanimously on Oct. 2 to appoint John Deckers as the next chief. He currently serves as a battalion chief for the fire department of West Hartford, Conn., a town more than four times the population of Westwood.
Deckers graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, the University of Connecticut, and Anna Maria College, where he earned a master’s degree in public administration, according to a press release.
He began his career as a call firefighter 25 years ago, and rose through the ranks to hold a series of leadership positions in West Hartford.
Westwood officials invited the public to an open house at the main fire station last week to honor Scoble’s “40 years of dedicated service.”Johanna Seltz can be reached at email@example.com.
